"art remix": A Special Exhibition with gallery UG, 20 Years in the Making

“art remix” — a collaborative exhibition with the 20-year-old gallery UG

plus art co.,ltd (Suginami-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Taku Nitta), a company dedicated to supporting today’s contemporary artists, is pleased to announce “art remix,” a collaborative exhibition held together with gallery UG (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Eiichiro Sasaki), which has discovered and nurtured artists for 20 years. The exhibition opens on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at +ART GALLERY on the 14th floor of Shibuya Scramble Square.

■ About “art remix”

A “remix” means re-editing a work, or the re-edited work itself. Here, we invite you to read it as looking afresh at existing works through a new perspective. In a contemporary art scene that changes at dizzying speed, our values are constantly being updated; looking again at a work from where we stand today can reveal something entirely new. We hope you’ll enjoy seeing how this exhibition resonates with Shibuya’s audience, who continue to drive the “now.”

■ Artists & Works

*The comments below are not official statements from the artists but the organizer’s own impressions, and contain a good deal of subjectivity. Please bear this in mind.

Kunihiko Nohara: Many of his works take clouds as their subject; the piece of a figure drowning in a cappuccino merges cloud and cappuccino into one delightfully unique image. He also creates many animal works, and you can enjoy Nohara’s charming, endearing pieces.

Takaomi Tajima: A sculptor by practice. His adorable animals, carved in sculpture, have a world all their own — marked by vivid coloring and playfully unique poses, they are lovely, soothing works.

Mikako Takahashi: Animals carry whole houses on their backs in a vast, intriguing world. Watching them walk through what looks like a desert evokes a powerful sense of solitude; gaze long enough and you are drawn into the world of the painting, captivated by the question of where these animals are headed.

Junko Asano: Animals are depicted within a nostalgic world. With their sense of an endlessly continuing space, and the mystery of what lies ahead, her works spark the viewer’s imagination. Vivid reds and yellows serve as accents against a calm, gray atmosphere.

Ryosuke Kabira: By using a pair of trousers as part of the canvas itself, he creates wonderfully unique works in which the garment and the background canvas become one. Each piece has a different mood, letting you enjoy the many worlds of Kabira’s art — truly one-of-a-kind works found nowhere else.

Nobuko Numano: Taking flowers and plants as her themes, she works with a wide range of materials, treating not only the front face but the sides of each piece as part of the work. The colorful palette stirs a wave of nostalgia that returns you to a childlike heart.

Hitomi Oshima: Beautiful flora and fauna are depicted with the quiet grace of Japanese-style painting, as if portraying the world Oshima herself has seen. A cat’s body is composed of animals and plants, where playfulness and beauty coexist.

Gekko Numata: Often taking animals and insects as subjects, Numata renders animal faces with striking realism, conveying lively, vivid expressions. The textures of fur and the surfaces of insects are captured with great delicacy.

Kana Uchida: Her colorful girls are her hallmark, with an endearing retro mood. Soft brushwork paired with clear, vivid colors gives the figures captivating expressions. The girls’ hair and the surrounding motifs are rendered with great delicacy, drawing out their beauty. Her world is wonderfully charming and full of fun.
