[Author introduction] eriarai

This is an introduction to eriarai, an artist in Collage Exhibition 2nd

eriarai

In daily life, I feel as though I am constantly collaging together the many elements that arise both within and around me—memories, emotions, and the like. To give visible form to that invisible act, I create my works by overlaying my own thoughts with the events recounted in newspapers.

drop

In this work, a "droplet"-like form emerged after pieces were joined together unconsciously. Just as unconscious acts in everyday life ultimately take shape, it expresses the importance of governing oneself.

Chi (To Know)

This work was created with the belief that, by "knowing" one's weakness, a person can become both gentle and strong. By connecting images of the past, present, and future, it depicts how suffering and fear are transformed into vitality.

seek

This work expresses the act of "searching" for oneself. It consciously brings to the surface the way one's self is thrown into relief through interaction with others—coming to recognize the unseen figure of oneself.

En (Connection)

This work expresses the "en" (ties) of our encounters with people and things. Both necessary and chance connections are all forms of en, and it was created with the wish that we cherish those ties.

disproportion
This work was created from the impression I had when reading Kiyokazu Washida's "Chiguhagu na Karada" (The Mismatched Body). It expresses how human bodily sensations are scattered like "fragments," and how, through imagination, the body is drawn out as a single whole.

Bunshin (Alter Ego)

This work consciously expresses an objective gaze upon oneself. By creating an "alter ego" to place distance between oneself and one's self, it depicts how we come to understand ourselves through comparison with others.

inner

This work expresses the power held "within." Based on the idea that what is genuine lies not in outward appearance but in the strength held inside, it portrays a world in which human vitality is released.

bundle

This work expresses the way the thoughts within oneself converge, gathered together like a "bundle."

Hatsu (To Send Out)

This work expresses the importance of "sending out" one's own thoughts in an ever-changing world.

discomfort
This work expresses the "discomfort" that accompanies boundless freedom, and the act of breaking free from its ambiguity. With the image of breaking out of one's shell, it was created with an awareness of the importance of actively engaging with freedom.

[Staff Comment]

eriarai's works are layered with countless newspaper-like fragments, from which you can sense the mood of our modern age—an era of information overload and chaos in society.

They are a delight to view up close, where you can even enjoy a tiny human face or the moment of reading the printed words.

Please do take a close look at eriarai's works✨
