In this "place" where I cannot reject everything, I may have been looking for some small crack.

I think he is trying to find an opportunity to bring the relationship of master and servant within the rectangle into the relationship including the space the viewer is in. I think this painting was an opportunity to think about the ability to combine images in a visual hybrid way.
