HOLBEIN ART FAIR 2022 3rd — Featured Artist: 福本 健一郎

福本 健一郎

Born in 1986 in Hiroshima Prefecture.

In 2014, completed the Master's Program at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Now based in Tokyo, creating paintings and sculptures.

Drawing inspiration from the forms and colors of natural-history encyclopedias across eras and cultures, the tapestries of various peoples, microorganisms of soil and sea, and the houseplants around him, he creates his work while reflecting on the relationship between humankind's creations and nature that has continued since ancient times.
In recent years, he has incorporated recycled and Japanese washi paper into his paintings, and combined varied materials and textures in his sculpture—time-worn wood such as driftwood and salvaged timber, and ceramics fired from clay he kneads himself.

Works in colorful palettes!
Three-dimensional works are on display as well.
Drawn with plants as their motif, they are characterized by an endearing atmosphere.

[Staff Comment]

In Fukumoto's works, plants and creatures in a variety of colors are rendered with a gentle touch, giving off a tender atmosphere ✨ Their coloring brims with a distinctive air reminiscent of ethnic textiles, and every piece carries a weight that lets you feel a sense of history! Gazing at the many plants—some real, some born of imagination—is wonderfully soothing! His three-dimensional works depict creatures like fairies of nature; every one of them is endearing and comforting ✨(Mogi)
