What are oil paints?

Oil paints are made by mixing pigments with vegetable oils such as poppy oil or linseed oil. When the oil comes into contact with air and oxidizes, the paint hardens. This chemical change occurs slowly, which is why oil paints do not dry immediately after painting. Unlike water-based paints, where the water evaporates, the oil hardens as it is, so oil paints remain thick even after drying.
