[Event Mid-Run Report] “Exhibition Zero: Creation, New Culture”

plus art co.,ltd (head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: 新田卓), a company whose business is built around the theme of enjoying contemporary art, is currently holding “Exhibition Zero – Creation, New Culture,” presenting works by five calligraphers and a Japanese-style painter, at +ART GALLERY on the 14th floor of Shibuya Scramble Square.

With the winter holidays underway, the gallery has welcomed a steady stream of visitors of all ages and nationalities—those who feel a personal affinity for calligraphy and practice it themselves, regular patrons with an interest in contemporary art, and passersby who happen upon the gallery and stop to take a closer look.

Many visitors paused before works celebrating the new year, such as those depicting sho-chiku-bai (pine, bamboo, and plum), the Seven Lucky Gods, and the rabbit of the new zodiac year. Several series proved especially popular with overseas visitors and sold out soon after the show opened.

A range of goods—including stickers, calendars, and T-shirts—is also available. Some items were created specially for this exhibition, so be sure not to miss them.

At the gallery, a limited-edition “Hana-mikuji” (flower fortune) capsule machine is also running. Beyond telling your fortune for the year, you might just win one of the T-shirts or calendars sold as goods. Why not try your luck for 2023?

On Saturday, January 7 from 14:00, a free-admission talk session featuring the artists is scheduled. It will be hosted by Dr. Hakuho Kawauchi, a scholar of calligraphy studies, and this time the discussion will also touch on Japanese-style painting.

When the artists are present in the gallery, you can ask them directly about the thoughts and concepts behind their works, so be sure to check their social media for the days they will be in attendance.

“Exhibition Zero – Creation, New Culture,” coloring the dawn of 2023, presents a wealth of works where tradition and innovation come together. Please do come and visit during the run of the show, which continues through the 15th.
