How accurately do we really remember the things we have seen over the course of our lives?
When I paint, the answer to that question becomes clear. By being unable to reproduce the "things I have seen"—the visual images—I came to realize just how loosely I grasp the world, and how I live within an uncertain reality that I have simply decided to call "memory." The more I rely on "sight," the more unreliable "memory" proves to be.
It is the same with people: I can only face them as uncertain, irreproducible scenes.
The face of a classmate I haven't seen in years, and the figure of a yokozuna I watched on television yesterday—I "remember" them both within the same kind of haze.
