“SYNESTHESIA” — introducing the artist 清水 智裕
清水 智裕
Rather than concrete forms, I want to capture something more like a “phenomenon.” When small fragments gather, they somehow begin to look like a single whole — yet the moment you look away, they may be scattered and blown apart once more. It is that fleeting “phenomenon” that I wish to record.

The drawings were originally made as preparatory sketches for the oil paintings.
They give form to shapes that surface like apparitions, to figures who seem to resemble someone yet are no one in particular, and to images born from a blend of various experiences and memories.

an image came to me of cells gathering for a moment to form a human shape, then quickly scattering apart again.
What lies before us now merely happens, by chance, to look that way; the instant we look away, it may fall apart and vanish.
Before that happens, I try somehow to gather it up and hold it together. My current practice feels much like that kind of work.

As COVID-19 spread and we could barely go outside, listening day after day to the announcements of death tolls,
an image came to me of cells gathering for a moment to form a human shape, then quickly scattering apart again.
What lies before us now merely happens, by chance, to look that way; the instant we look away, it may fall apart and vanish.

The space is full of lovely works.

The colors are simply wonderful.

We hope you'll visit the venue in person!
Staff Comment
Shimizu has a masterful command of negative space, and the simple, ephemeral girls placed at the center of each canvas draw the eye.✨ Rendered with a soft sense of volume, they radiate a quiet presence! The largely monochrome works carry a contemporary air, and depending on how they are painted, the impression shifts as you look — every one a lovely piece! (Mogi)
