Additional Information
Oil painting primer
You can use commercially available white canvas as is, but if you want to improve the properties of the base, you can apply various base paints.
For example, 1) to hide the inherent color of the support and improve the color development of the paint. 2) to help the paint adhere. 3) to adjust the gloss and drying of the paint. There are also secondary purposes such as 4) to expand the range of expression by varying the painting method.
Foundation paint
It has the same viscosity as regular paint in a tube, and is a base paint that can be applied thickly or with a touch of paint.
To soften foundation paint, use volatile oil. If you use a drying oil painting fluid, it may take a long time to dry, but this is because a film will form and the paint will not adhere well. If possible, allow the painted surface to dry for at least one month before using it.
Precautions when using foundation paints
-
Characteristics
The white lead used as a pigment has a flat crystal structure and large particle size, and expands and contracts little during drying, so it does not cause cracks in the paint applied on top. The large particle size means that it absorbs little oil, and the white lead itself accelerates the drying of the oil, so the entire paint dries quickly.
The linseed oil we use is a drying oil that creates a strong, dry coating and is ideal for creating a stable base. - Caution : When lead white pigment comes into contact with sulfur compounds in the air, it will turn black as it produces lead sulfide. It is best not to let it dry in places with a lot of sulfur compounds, such as hot spring fumes or gasoline vehicle exhaust fumes. Also, if you use Foundation White as a top coat, it is prone to blackening due to lead sulfide, so you should apply Tableau after it has dried.
- Method 1: Painting on a new canvas
When painting on a new canvas, apply a thin layer once to adjust the color and texture or to create a texture, then apply a second layer once it has dried. Use this method to paint to the desired thickness. If you paint a thick layer all at once, it will take longer to dry through, which will delay the time you can start working on it.
- Method 2: Painting on an old canvas
Dissolve the paint on the canvas thoroughly with Eco Remover or similar, then use a penting knife to remove as many unevenness as possible, wipe thoroughly with petrol, and then paint.
Quick Base
Quick Base is a flowable base that dries to a durable, non-glossy base that improves the adhesion, spread and color development of oil paints applied on top.
It can be used on canvas, cotton cloth (sailcloth), boards, plywood panels, paper boards, etc., and can also be used to restore old canvas.
