Introduction
More than just looking!
What should you do when you're thinking of buying?
Have you ever seen works on display in a corner of a department store or shopping complex?
A space filled with many works really catches the eye, doesn't it? Many of you have probably stopped in while passing by.
Solo shows, group shows, art fairs — the formats vary, but at most exhibitions you can actually buy the works!
That said, in reality, prices often aren't shown, and sometimes you can't even tell whether a piece is for sale.
“I don't know much, so it's hard to approach the gallery staff…” “I'm not even sure what to ask…”
For anyone who feels that way, this time we'll give you an easy-to-follow explanation of what a typical gallery is like and how the purchasing process works!
There are different kinds of galleries!
Did you know there are many different kinds of galleries?
Knowing the characteristics of each makes it much easier to drop by!

Commercial galleries
These are galleries whose purpose is selling works. They often handle a wide range, from renowned artists to up-and-coming young talents! Prices tend to be on the higher side, but you can see highly regarded works up close. As they exist for sales, they can feel a little imposing.
Rental galleries
Here, artists rent the gallery themselves to hold solo or group shows! Exhibitions by young artists such as students are common, and prices are often relatively accessible. The spaces can be small, so it might take a touch of courage to step inside.
Exhibitions and sales at department stores and shopping complexes
Sometimes displayed in a corner of the floor, these are easy spaces to enter! The works are approachable, making them especially recommended for beginners!
Art fairs
These are events where many artists and galleries gather at once! A wide variety of works is often displayed across a large space, so these too are relatively easy to enter and recommended for beginners!
I'd love to actually buy a piece! The flow of purchasing a work
For those who've made it to a gallery but feel anxious about “how do I actually buy a piece?”
here's the typical flow!

① Find a work that catches your eye!
Wander freely through the gallery and look for a piece that draws you in on instinct!
Prices often aren't listed, but in most cases the work is available to purchase.
See our related article: “Art isn't difficult! How to choose paintings that even beginners can enjoy.”
② Try speaking to the gallery staff!
They'll be happy to tell you about the work's concept, technique, price, and more!
If you find it hard to start a conversation, take a look at the gallery's table and the like. There's often a list of works set out! This is called a price list, and it gathers together the prices of the works. It's usually left out for visitors to browse freely, so feel free to pick it up!
③ Things to confirm when purchasing!
Be sure to check the payment and shipping methods, as well as the delivery timeline!
In many cases, the work is shipped after the exhibition ends.
④ Now display it!
There are all sorts of ways to display a work! Do take a look at this article for reference!

What makes galleries so special?
The greatest joy of visiting a gallery is, above all, getting to see the works in person!
A work has many faces. Enjoy it from a variety of angles!
What's more, at galleries and exhibitions, the artist is sometimes present! It's a precious chance to speak directly with the very person who created the work. By not only viewing the work but also enjoying a conversation with the artist, you can come to understand the art more deeply
and perhaps encounter a truly special piece!
If an exhibition catches your interest, do check the artist's attendance schedule, too!
