3. Why We Recommend This Artist
1. Profile
Artist: Taishi Urakawa
Profile:
Taishi Urakawa was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1994 and graduated from the Faculty of Art at Kyushu Sangyo University in 2017. His work is characterized by spatial compositions that draw on the way games and Google Maps render space, together with digital-feeling brushwork reminiscent of Photoshop and paint software.
Exhibitions he has taken part in recent years include “It’s Not Over Till It’s Over” (Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, 2019); “Taishi Urakawa × Namonaki Sanemasa: A Window onto Strange Scenery” (Seiryoku Art Museum, Okawa, Fukuoka, 2021); “Taishi Urakawa × Namonaki Sanemasa: Window of Strange Scenery” (contemporary HEIS, Tokyo, 2021); and “Pseudo-Landscape” (The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts — Chinretsukan Gallery, 2022). In 2015 he won an Award of Excellence at the 24th Ei Exhibition “Radius 3 Meters,” and in 2018 he received the Ohara Museum of Art Prize at VOCA 2018.
2. Works
"I am based mainly in Fukuoka, and my work centers above all on existence.
Existence clearly supports things, and yet it is terribly vague—it never reveals itself before us. By examining indirectly—since doing so directly is impossible—this “thing” whose very presence is uncertain, might we not be able to glimpse our own existence from another vantage point?"
Taishi Urakawa
