3. Why We Recommend This Artist
1. Profile
Artist: Sotaro Hori
Profile:
Sotaro Hori
explores the possibilities of representational painting in a world overflowing with images—photographs, video, CG and the like. At present he focuses on the “surface quality and the effects of light” of digital images.
If everything were to possess something like a soul, then by turning it into an image he cuts away a part of it, processes it, and revives it in the flesh of paint—aiming for a practice that gives rise to something altogether new.
Born 1996 in Kyoto Prefecture
2. Works
These are characters from films such as
SF blockbusters and American comic-book movies,
who—through CG compositing—
exist “for real” only within the world of the image,
characters that embody the very
“ambiguity of presence.”

3. Why We Recommend This Artist
Sotaro Hori works across a wide variety of media, from three-dimensional pieces to digital images. He also uses LEGO bricks, stones, toilet paper and other everyday materials in his work. The pieces vary in size, yet each leaves a powerful presence in the space around it.
Taking the ambiguity of presence as his theme, he creates paintings—portraits rendered in oils. They also invite reflection on the relationship between painting and the image, between painting and AI.
