“SYNESTHESIA” — introducing the artist Introducing the artist IKU→

IKU→
While working primarily in fashion, IKU→ sought freer means of expression and, immersing themselves in art-making, moved to the United States. After signing with a New York gallery and beginning a career as an artist, they held several exhibitions. On returning to Japan they worked under the name khayah, and since 2020 as IKU→. I longed to meet myself. Yet precisely because I am myself, that meeting can never happen. I am aware of being “me,” but what is that self, and why does it exist? Through the creatures connected to me and the flow of a single fleeting moment, I become aware of myself. Drawing inspiration from everyday feelings and lived experience, IKU→ contemplates views on life and death, and the location of that thing we call a “face” as it arises from relationships with others and with the self — giving form, through questioning, to a variety of psychological faces.

From the glittering texture and vivid colors, you sense a beauty as if the subject were lit from many angles.✨ These are works to savor slowly, imagining what expression the depicted figures wear and what feelings they hold. (Kawahara)
