[Artist introduction] ARISAK

“Monthly ARISAK vol.X” — Introducing the artist ARISAK.

ARISAK (photo artist / former figure skater / art director)

Inspired by ten years of figure skating, she has continued to make photographs. Often handling art direction at the same time, she has broadened her work—magazines, advertising, and more—with her distinctive Dark Fantasy style. She was named one of VOGUE JAPAN’s ten young Japanese artists to watch. Signing with the leading Italian car brand FIAT, she developed a self-portrait ad campaign under her own direction for about a year. More recently, she was chosen as a former figure skater for the NIKE × sacai commercial.

【Works】※A selection of works is shown here

【vol.1】I'm fine, Guest: TEMANDA

“Yeah, I’m totally fine!” — we say it out loud, but it isn’t really true. Unable to tell anyone, we are in fact falling apart inside. We asked drag queen TEMANDA to portray that gradual unraveling of the mind.

【vol.2】となりの脳は青く見える、Guest: KAi MiWA / Rion Watley

"となりの芝生は青くみえる"という言葉があるように、
When we witness talent or quick thinking we ourselves lack, we sometimes feel envy—wondering why we can’t do what comes so naturally to others. Yet, seen from the outside, others may not view us that way at all, and from a different angle there may even be parts of us that others envy. This work gives shape to those inner thoughts.

KAi MiWA plays the envying figure in white,
and Rion Watley the envied figure in blue.

Please watch this visual story, in which
the color of the face shifts as the thoughts gradually change.

【Staff Comment】

ARISAK handles everything from direction to shooting herself. Although each work has its own world, every one carries an unmistakable ARISAK atmosphere. Each piece is filled with its own story and feeling, so we hope you will come and take in ARISAK’s world at the gallery!

【Exhibition Information】

ARISAK’s appeal lies in a creative power that goes beyond photographing her subjects: she also takes charge of the art direction—how each subject is staged—leading from the front to help shape the scene of the times.

Monthly ARISAK began from her own wish to “work overseas”: a project in which she builds a full year’s worth of her own shoots as the visuals of a fictional magazine. With professional creators—models, set decorators, hair and makeup artists, and more—coming together to complete each work, we invite you to see the culmination of it all at the gallery.
