HOLBEIN ART FAIR 2022 3rd — Featured Artist: 須貝 旭
須貝 旭
My works change in appearance as time passes. The silver leaf tarnishes, the oil yellows, and the cyanotype fades, so the initially silver-bright surface gradually shifts in color. For that reason, it is impossible to predict precisely how a work will look after months, years, or even decades.
Traditionally, painting has been expected not to change. Even when the actual motif decayed and vanished from sight, the image the painter rendered remained unchanged within the painting, preserved as a stand-in for memory and record.
My works, however, are images that keep changing, and the same appearance can never be seen twice.
When we stand before these works, what emerges, I believe, is not time sealed and halted within the painting, but rather a past yet to come, a future already passed, or a hazy, ungraspable “present moment.”

By their very nature, these works change color over time!

The photos in the work list were taken just after completion, so you can enjoy comparing how each piece has transformed! 🧭
[Staff Comment]
Sugai's works employ the cyanotype, a photographic process that develops color through exposure to UV light. Pieces that transform over time can be enjoyed in so many ways, which I find fascinating! His grand, almost cosmic works hold a quiet, mysterious charm that sets the mind at ease ✨(Mogi)
