太古の昔から神話は、その土地で起こった出来事を元に物語られる。
今回私が注目したのは、ウルトラ怪獣についてだ。日本の特撮シリーズの元祖であるウルトラシリーズには当初から軍拡競争やベトナム戦争、差別などの時事を反映した作品が多い。当時の日本では世界で起きている社会問題を、ウルトラ怪獣という形で、当時の大人が戦争の反省から番組をみる未来ある子供たちに伝えていたように思える。
私は「神話とウルトラ怪獣のつくりは、非常に似ている」と感じている。どちらも時代を超えて人間の営みの中で起きた問題を象徴化し、目に見える形にして、人々に伝えている部分だ。
私はこの形式をモチーフに、現代にはどんな怪獣がいるのだろうと考えた。最近の脅威としては、ウイルスや環境破壊から生じる自然災害があげられるが、一方では音速で飛ぶ武器やAI、SNSでの情報の氾濫など人為的な社会環境の変化も脅威として現れている。これらのような目にはとらえることが難しい災いが増えてきたように感じる。今回は、その見えづらい問題をモチーフに現代の怪獣を制作する。
同時に、私自身が子供の頃に影響を受けてきたマンガ・アニメ・ゲームといったツルツルとした平成以降のフラット文化をつなぎ新たな物語を生み出していく。
毛皮の素材を観察し、実験しながら制作していきました。下地や絵の具の塗り重ねで生まれる毛皮の溝をマチエールとして活かしながら描きました。
