I was born into an era that was called “peace.” Yet day after day I am troubled by a single doubt: “this world is not at peace.” Of course, I am no head of state, and even if I came to understand the world’s problems, I could not solve them. Still, as someone living in the present, I want to know the true nature of those problems. “What is the meaning of a soldier’s existence?” “Why has humankind, as a single species, multiplied to such numbers?” “What is the real face of desire?” The questions I have felt while living within this society, I take up again and again in my work. I believe these are not my problems alone—that they are surely connected to the essential problem of the world itself. Rather than calling them artworks, I would ask you to think of them as equations for seeking out the true form of the world’s problem: the state of war.
The works on view here use great quantities of toy soldiers, miniature office workers, paper airplanes, doll arms and the like. Seen one by one, each is a toy, full of playfulness. But when they are layered, repeated and made to appear in vast numbers, a sense of fear and danger arises. That, I think, is how I see the world. One person’s problem is not frightening; the problem of 7 billion people (the world’s population) is surely terrifying. One soldier is not frightening; 2.29 million soldiers (the size of China’s military) would surely become something to fear. What I want to express is the problems and contradictions that lie beneath these enormous numbers, and the state of war born from them. And within the everyday scenes built from those vast numbers, I want to find the extraordinary.

At first glance, it is hard to tell what Majiahao’s works depict. But as you draw closer, you realize they are made from masses of human figures and hands. The overwhelming energy they radiate is such that, once you have seen them, you cannot bring yourself to leave.

While Majiahao’s theme remains consistent, his works span a wide range, from large pieces to small ones.
His works carry such a strong presence that, placed in an entrance hall or reception room, they make a powerful focal point.
And because he creates around themes of socialism and the problems of the world, for anyone with a deep interest in global affairs, the time spent quietly contemplating his work is sure to prove richly rewarding.
