Gesso (primer)

Gesso is a white milky liquid made by mixing extender pigments such as titanium white and calcium carbonate with acrylic emulsion as a medium. It is mainly used as a ground coat to seal the support, fix paint, and aid color development. It also has strong hiding power and can be used as a coloring material like paint.

What is Gesso?

Gesso is a base material that is applied to various supports (canvas, board, etc.) before painting (before applying paint). The origin of gesso is a plaster-based gesso (Italian: Gesso) that was originally used as a base coat for tempera paintings. It is mainly used as a base for watercolors, but can also be used as a base for oil paints. However, care must be taken when using it.

The need for gesso

Gesso is not necessarily required. Gesso is a base paint that has a similar composition to the canvas paint that is already applied to the canvas, and is used to adjust the surface of the canvas to your own taste. If you prefer the texture of the canvas surface, you can paint on it as is.
