[Exhibition] Announcing the Three-Artist Show "Vulnerability"

Announcing the Three-Person Exhibition “Vulnerability”

plus art co.,ltd (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Representative: Taku Nitta), a company dedicated to supporting today’s contemporary artists, is pleased to announce the three-person exhibition “Vulnerability,” featuring Arisa in Wonderland, ITOSHI SAKHRANI and REI INABA, opening Monday, November 14, 2022 at +ART GALLERY on the 14th floor of Shibuya Scramble Square.

About This Exhibition

The exhibition’s concept, “Vulnerability,” carries the meaning of “fragility,” and into it we have woven the message of “showing your true, honest self.”

Revealing the parts of ourselves we would rather not show, or exposing our own weaknesses, can sometimes leave us hurt — yet it can also lead to positive outcomes. Although the word carries negative nuances, expressing actions and feelings that are hard to show others is in fact a strength, and the self-disclosure of showing your honest self can become the very spark that makes life wonderful.

Together with three artists who resonate with this word and, even amid their own struggles, continue to express themselves, we present the three-person exhibition “Vulnerability.”

We will also exhibit and sell artworks by Arisa in Wonderland, ITOSHI SAKHRANI and REI INABA.

In addition, on Saturday, November 19 and Saturday, November 26 during the run, we are planning a reception party and talk session for a select group of guests, with the artists scheduled to attend. (Details will be shared with members of the +ART GALLERY online store and with those connected to the artists.)

Introductions to the participating artists and interview videos will be shared via our social media ( Instagram ). Information on the participating artists is also given later in this article, which we hope you will read.

We look forward to welcoming you all.

PROFILE

Arisa in Wonderland

Born in Shirokane, Minato-ku, Tokyo, she moved to Las Vegas at the age of three.
Interested in art from childhood, she joined the Las Vegas art club during her elementary and junior high school years. In high school she transferred to the art specialty school LVA, where she began studying oil painting and sculpture in earnest.
For university she studied painting, performance and digital art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). In spring 2018 she relocated her base to Japan, and after working as a model and talent with Oscar Promotion and appearing as MC on NHK’s “Sokures Eikaiwa,” she is now active across a variety of fields.
Drawing inspiration from the Tokyo art scene, she is currently using 3D software and a 3D printer to create character figures. Embracing the theme of the “pure self,” she expresses emotions felt in everyday life — tears of joy, delight, sadness — through her characters’ facial expressions.

<Background>
In 2021 she exhibited at Akasaka KAISU, and in April 2022 she took part in an exhibition at Laforet Harajuku and an exhibition at the Shibuya crossing. She plans to take part in various art exhibitions, and is currently at work on a picture book.

ITOSHI SAKHRANI (Itoshi Sakhrani)

Painter
Born in 1987 in Tokyo
Of British, Indian and Okinawan heritage, with a background of growing up in a borderless environment.
As a teenager, she attended an international school in Okinawa and a local school in Tokyo. She spent her student years absorbed in graffiti art, creating posters and flyers for events and designing T-shirts. Today, alongside exhibiting and selling paintings, she is active across a wide range of fields, including collaborations with various companies.

<Concept>
When I think about what my own way of expression really is, the first things that come to mind are my family, and then the environment in which I grew up.
An individual is formed by the DNA inherited from one’s parents and by the influence of everything one has encountered from birth to the present, and from that, I believe, our daily habits and the scenes around us are born.
I feel that all of it is a continuous succession of irreplaceable things, and in my creative work in particular, I place great importance on enjoying it freely.
By not being bound by (social value standards), (things that are planned or meaningful), or (feelings of superiority and inferiority), the things that make up who I am take on different colors and forms and appear naturally on the canvas.
There, you find a life — flesh and blood.
Creating is a dialogue between the artist and the work, a kind of phenomenon in which the two change one another.
When you view the work, please feel it freely, in your own way.

REI INABA|Rei Inaba

Japan’s only painter working in his own original technique of “fiber painting,” in which he affixes threads from kimono.
He also works in oil painting, monotype printmaking and mixed media, and has exhibited widely overseas, including in Amsterdam and Taipei.
From corporate-collaboration murals to live painting at events, he continues to work across a broad range, both figurative and abstract.
Last year, out of a wish to bring art more deeply into everyday life, he launched the art event “Desert Water,” which he organizes — Rei Inaba, the fiber painter.
This time, under the theme of the concept “Vulnerability,” he will exhibit mainly newly created abstract works, a genre he has rarely shown until now.
*Please also take a look at his new surfboard and fiber-painting works.
