An introduction to kerocchi, an artist featured in Collage Exhibition 1st.
kerocchi
Born in Nishinomiya, Hyogo in 1997. Based in Tokyo.
While at university, began creating collages and writing as a form of resistance against loneliness. I can recall the first time I made a collage as vividly as if it were yesterday. As I cut out the materials with a craft knife, I felt as though the mass of emotion inside me was being cut open at the same time. Yet I have still not reached the core that lies deeper within, and I am searching for it even now. Words wander round and round inside my head like discarded artificial satellites, and life goes on, dragging the emotions that come with them. What lies beyond cutting out materials and that mass of emotion? Perhaps it has already rotted into a sludge, or perhaps it never existed in the first place. I truly don’t know. But pain, sorrow, all emotions mix and melt and turn into creation. Exhibiting is self-harm, treatment, and shame all at once. By letting others see these things, I half-irritably hope that some vague form will begin to emerge.

[Staff Comment]
These collage works are created by cutting out objects little by little. Despite all the cutting and pasting, they have a real sense of cohesion, which I found very stylish. A melting clock looks like bubbles of water, and the depiction of contemplating thought becomes Saturn — by cutting and combining countless things, the artist expresses a single theme in fascinating ways 🌜 The bold approach that refuses to be bound by convention is a highlight; pondering the intentions behind each piece is part of the fun 📍
