An introduction to Meiyu, an artist featured in the “Zero Exhibition.”

Meiyu
Working in a style that is at once delicate and dynamic, the artist commands a wide range of scripts—from the basic regular (kaisho) script to ancient characters from 3,000 years ago. Grounded in classical, traditional calligraphy, the work pursues the beauty of empty space, expressing Japan’s distinctive sense of “ma” (interval) through the interplay of stillness and motion. To share the appeal of calligraphy with the world, the artist provides work to many countries.

[Staff Comment]
Every piece is dynamic and full of movement! The spacing between the held strokes and the flowing ones is wonderfully distinctive, and the artist moves fluidly among many scripts—each lending its own mood—so that simply looking at the works lifts the heart! (Mogi)
