What is Jesso?

Gesso is a base material that is applied to various supports (such as canvas or boards) before drawing (before placing paint on it). Gesso's origins are the plastered gypsum gesso (Italy), which was originally used to paint tempera paintings. It is mainly used as a watercolor base, but can also be used as a base for oil paint. However, caution is required when using it.
