About the Artwork
伝統的に仏教絵画の題材として扱われる「涅槃図」をモチーフに現代版の解釈を加え制作した作品。 画面中央に横たわる年老いた私の自画像を囲むように、現代に生きる人間や、動物、妖怪など様々なキャラクターたちを描いている。 そこには人種、さらには人間か動物であるかということさえも超えた世界が展開されており、それぞれのキャラクターたちが自由に交流している。 いわばこの世の森羅万象を描くことといっても過言ではない涅槃図。彼らが生きる世界は生と死の狭間に存在する世界なのかもしれない。 しかしながら決して非現実な光景だとは思ってはいない。 なぜなら絵に描くという事は、そこで起きている事が描かれた途端にそれは現実となり僕らの生きる世界と接続するから。
