His works are characterized by precise, realistic paintings hand-painted using acrylic paints. He began his career as a painter in 2010, starting with a solo exhibition in New York. His creative activities have expanded to include mural painting, stage art, TV drama art, product collaborations with brands and companies, and providing works to music artists. He began to fully develop his work overseas in 2015, and was based in the UK for two years until 2017. During that time, he held solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Amsterdam. In 2018, he started his own company after producing a performance group. Not only does he take on the stage art as a painter, but he also directs dancers, composers, filmmakers, photographers, and fashion designers as a comprehensive art form, and is the first Japanese person to perform at Aux Belles Poules in Paris. He began his activities in Thailand after collaborating with the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. As a muralist, he organized the art project "Art Can Help You" in Bangkok, based on the SDGs. The event was held at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) and attracted 1,500 participants. Currently, he bases his creative beliefs on "creating a space through art" and is based in the Zao Onsen hot spring resort area of Yamagata Prefecture.

In 2018, I launched and started a performance group called "KOOYA" that creates a new world beyond the limits of canvas. The art I express is not limited by form. I challenge multifaceted expression through sound, light, and movement, going beyond flat and three-dimensional forms. I fuse dance, which has a different beauty from canvas paintings, to create a glamorous, mysterious, and powerful world on stage. The works created by our team generate new inspiration and pursue the limits of unknown expression. In this way, I direct not only as a painter, but also as a comprehensive art that includes dancers, composers, filmmakers, photographers, and fashion designers. Starting with the "Spring Dream Kyokyo" performance hosted in Japan, I have expanded my activities around the world, appearing at Hyper Japan in London and Japan Expo Paris in France, and have steadily built up a track record, including being the first Japanese person to successfully perform a solo performance in Paris. In November 2019, I performed at Lhong1919 in Thailand during the ASEAN Summit, inviting officials from the Thai Embassy in Thailand, and acted as part of an important international exchange between Japan and Thailand. In January 2020, they performed an all-day show at the Edo Stage in the international terminal of Haneda Airport, followed immediately by four stages at the largest Japanese cultural exposition in Asia, JAPAN EXPO Thailand 2020. In February of the same year, they performed at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), and in July they appeared at JAPAN EXPO Malaysia GOES VIRTUAL, spreading their activities to the world through online events and video production.

Since 2019, he has focused on his work as a muralist, planning a "National Mural Pilgrimage" across Japan, and currently has murals in 15 locations across all 47 prefectures. In 2020, he held an art project on the theme of SDGs, "Art Can Help You," in Bangkok, attracting 1,500 participants over three days. This project was highly praised in Japan and was featured on Fuji TV's "Future Runners: 17 Futures" as "My Desire to Color the Town as a Muralist." I believe that there is something we can do through art so that everyone can live a colorful and fulfilling life. He is also working on developing paints for the visually impaired, holding events where he paints with citizens and providing art that everyone can participate in. As of 2024, he is producing a multi-sensory workshop called "OPAQUE - A Clue to Darkness," in which participants are blindfolded and paint only by relying on the scent of the paint, and holding it in collaboration with educational institutions.

In 2021, I moved from Tokyo to Yamagata and am working on a public art project with the local government. The murals I painted at stations, roadside stations, shopping streets, etc. are registered as city assets, and I feel that the influence of art in local cities is large and lasting. Through "local x art," I aim to create works that are close to the history, culture, and feelings of the people of the region. I capture "lost history," "buried culture," and "desires to cherish" from the same perspective as the local people, and express them colorfully with my own unique worldview. The completed art not only gives comfort and hope to people living in rural areas, but also gives people from the city a fresh sense of nostalgia. I aim for my art to be a catalyst for various actions and encounters, and to become a bridge to the region.

■Details

Artist name: Kobayashi Maika

Production year: 2022

Edition: 1

Size: H300×W150×D120(mm)

Material: Polystone

Delivery period: Approximately 2 weeks to 1 month after the end of the entire session

Handling: PlusArt Co., Ltd.

■ Regarding shipping fees

All shipping charges for artworks sold at +ART Online Gallery are cash on delivery.
