When Leonardo da Vinci painted the “Mona Lisa,” photography did not yet exist, so he closely observed and meticulously studied the “light,” “shadow,” “form,” “facial expression” and “beauty” of the natural world. He also struck a balance between realistic and artistic expression in pursuit of creative freedom.
